Fabric Cafe Tops I’ve Made January 2026

In January of this year I tested two 5 yard quilt patterns that Fabric Cafe revealed on May 12, 2026. Today I’m sharing these tops and I’ve included a few tips.

Book – Holly Jolly 5-Yard Quilts

The Holly Jolly 5-Yard book highlights eight 5-yard quilt patterns using Christmas/ Holiday fabrics. It was nice to do some Holiday stitching in January. It sort of felt like it extended the holiday for me!  Of course, these patterns can be made with other fabrics.

I like that all eight patterns are shown on the back of the book. I’ve added stickers on the tops I made.

Patterns I Tested –

Heart Strings

Five-Yard quilt patterns make up a bit larger than the 3-Yard patterns. This one finishes 55″ x 75″.

Using Strip Piecing and minimal Half Square Triangles, this pattern actually uses only one block made in two colorways. This makes it a good pattern for a beginner.

The Focus Fabric in the center of the blocks is cut in a square and will work with a Directional Fabric.

Speaking from experience, make sure to keep your eye on the direction of the Half Square Triangles. (Don’t ask me how I know 😞 )

Warm Wishes

Warm Wishes is a 5-Yard quilt pattern that finishes at a 53″ x 75″ size. A twin mattress is 38″ x 75″. It would be a twin topper but can be enlarged up to a Queen/King quilt  It would be a nice sofa quilt for two people to cuddle under.

Skill Level – Intermediate – Four rows are made with mirrored blocks which include Flying Geese, Stitch & Flip and two sizes of Half Square Triangles. In the video Fran demonstrates how the block is assembled.

TIPThis block uses small pieces. I recommend using Mary Ellen’s Best Spray or your favorite starch to add a bit of stiffness before cutting the pieces.  This helps prevent stretching and fraying.

TIPI usually press my seams to one side to help match my points, while making this block I recommend pressing your seams open to reduce bulk and then take extra care to match your points.

This pattern uses two Focus Fabrics. This is a good pattern if you have some fabric you would like to display without cutting it to pieces. Three rows are full width of cuts of one Focus Fabric and two rows are made from the other Focus Fabric. These rows are Directional Fabric Friendly.

TIPTo be more accurate, I recommend making the Rows with the blocks first and then trimming the remaining full Width of Fabric rows to match.

The remaining six patterns are all fun to make, too. The other patterns are Cabin Cozy, Comfort & Joy, First Frost, Starry Night, Sugar & Spice and Winter Glow.  You can read more about these here. I’ve recently made the Comfort & Joy in non-Christmas fabric and love how it turned out! I’ll share that in another post.

  1. Both of these are beautiful quilts, my fav is Warm Wishes. I always tell myself I’m gonna make a Christmas quilt in July but usually don’t remember it until December LOL!
