No Calorie Candy Corn

I like quilting, but sometimes I come across a project that isn’t quilting.  In browsing the Internet, I’ve recently found a number of interesting projects.

One of these projects is Molly’s Sketchbook: Candy Corn Trick or Treat Bags This was posted on the Purl Bee Blog in 2010 – So, I’ve been making “Candy Corn” – the no-calorie version!

This is a simple project, and has a minimal amount of machine and hand stitching.  It could even be made entirely by hand-sewing.

A quick trip to Joann’s Fabrics and I found felt-by-the-yard on sale in the necessary orange & yellow colors.  Since I only needed a small amount of white, I just picked up a couple of small 9”x12” pre-cut felt sheets.  Add in a spool of orange gross grain ribbon, and I was ready to make my bags.

These will make nice Trick or Treat Bags or just Candy containers/holiday decorations.

I’m off to my sewing room for some block testing.

Guess I’m Ready

A couple of days ago we discovered, what I thought was a 5K (3 mile) walk is actually a 6.5K (4.4 mile) walk.  This is concerns me, as my knees & hips rebel against long walks and it has taken me the entire summer to condition my legs to walk 2.5 miles in our neighborhood.  I’ve been working hard to get built up to do what I thought would be a 3 mile walk.

So this week, I’ve had to really push myself.  Thursday I made it to 3.25 miles and my knee started slipping as I reached the 3 mile mark.  Friday, though I didn’t ‘officially’ walk, I attended my Quilting for Good group.  I didn’t personally get a lot of sewing done because we had so many newbies, I was available to help them.  So I was on my feet, walking the classrooms and the store from 10 am – 3 pm.

This morning, Zonya & I got out to walk, either the path I had mapped out or 2 hours or until my legs gave out – whichever happen 1st!  We normally walk a couple of loops in the neighborhood, but today we headed out to Sligo Parkway Trail.  Basically I chose to walk the 1-mile stretch round-trip and the half-mile stretch back toward the neighborhood.  Then I planned on walking a couple of loops in the neighborhood, which allowed me to have several options to cut it short, if necessary.

Two hours (& 1 minute) later, we got home.  We had walked the entire path I had planned, plus one extra short loop for a total of 4.4 miles (rough calculation).  And, just like Thursday, my knee started hurting me about the 3 mile mark.  I slowed down and limped the remaining distance.  I’m now sitting in the recliner, leg elevated, Aleve taken, ointment rubbed into the knee & knee brace on – but we walked 4.4 miles in 2 hours! [Zonya does not appear to be a bit tired!]

Tomorrow the weather is suppose to be much cooler – high in the mid-50’s, and cloudy with light showers.  The walk begins at 9 am, but registration starts at 8 am.  This means we have to leave the house about 5:30 am.

Thanks to those of you that have supported Kim & me with your donations.  Tomorrow we will be walking – Making Strides Against Breast Cancer – Southern Maryland – PAX River Navy Exchange Team

Getting Ready–Countdown 4 days to go

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer – Southern Maryland 5K Event is 4 days away. We didn’t walk yesterday because of the Rain – OK, I’m a ‘fair-weather walker!”

So, this morning, Zonya & I walked, and even tried out one of the Neckerchiefs that I made yesterday.

We walked the neighborhood and went 2.5 miles in 50 minutes.  My goal is to make it in under 1 hour.

After a short rest, and some Cheerios, I think today will be more sewing!

Today’s Sewing

Today has been rainy, so it was a good day for sewing!

In preparation for the 5K on Sunday, we wanted some Bandanas for Zonya, K-Czar & Hiccup. (Bre will be staying home with Mel.)

Using some material I picked up at Michaels, I made reversible neckerchiefs – one side is pink camo and the other is white with pink ribbons. The dogs will look sharp for the 5K Walk on Sunday!

Tomorrow I will need to get a walk or two and do some quilting.

Mammogram Monday

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Research has brought the treatment of Breast Cancer a long way, but it is still the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American Women besides Skin Cancer. About 1 in 8 women in the US will develop invasive Breast Cancer in their lifetime.

This coming Sunday, October 7th, Kim & I, along with our 4-legged walking partners, Zonya, Hiccup & K-Czar will participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer – Southern Maryland, as part of the PAX River Navy Exchange Team.  The American Cancer Society sponsored 5K Walk will begin @ 9 am at the Wildewood Shopping Center in California, Maryland. If you are in the area and want to join our team, you can sign up online at the PAX River Navy Exchange Team Site.

If you want to donate to support my walk, you can donate online at My Making Strides Website.  No pressure.  You can also support me by scheduling your annual Mammogram!

I’m off to get mine this morning.
