It’s still August but we had a few mornings which have actually been a bit cool – 65°F is not cold but definitely not part of “the dog days of summer!” Don’t worry, hot weather will be here next week.

In the Kitchen

Wednesday I planned Spaghetti Sauce & Meatballs in the Slow Pot and I decided our dinner needed something special. Actually two somethings special.

Special #1 – Before my surgery I usually made 2 or 3 loaves of bread a week. I’ve missed that! For our dinner I began the day making French Bread. I use this simple recipe – Small Loaf French Bread from the One Dish Kitchen – cooking for one. I use my bread machine’s Dough Setting to mix and do the 1st Rise. After the machine stops a few turns kneading and shaping and the loaf was ready for the 2nd rise. Twenty minutes baking and the bread was done.

The loaf is the perfect size for the three of us and lasts a couple of meals. That is if I don’t keep sneaking slices with butter!

Special #2 – A few weeks ago we had an abundance of strawberries. Before they could go bad, hubby diced them up and we froze them in 2 cup measurements. I took one 2-cup jar out of the freezer. While waiting for the bread to rise the 2nd time I quickly assembled a Fluffy Frozen Strawberry Pie. This is a frequent summer dessert at our house.

In the Sewing Room

I played with some fall fabric and made some Flying Geese.

Primarily I spent a lot of time in my sewing room making a mess and working on small projects!
