Leftovers

Whether it is just sewing or quilting, you end up with leftovers. Some pieces are large enough for other projects – a pillow case made from leftover quilting fabric, accessories from leftover totebags…

Even after making all those other projects, there are more leftovers…

Some may be squares or strips – 1-4" — can’t throw these away, can you? It would be such a waste!

Other pieces are mere strips, uneven and scraggly. Surely there isn’t any use for these small pieces, is there???

Well, actually, the answer is yes, you really can use EVERY inch of the fabric! Working on a project using these pieces & strips. Pictures tomorrow.

Every Bag Needs Some Accessories!

When you Quilt or Sew, there is always leftover fabric. You can’t let it go to waste, and anyway, just what else would I do with Cowboy Fabric?? So, with a bit of this and a bit of that, you create Accessories.

A Tissue Holder – For when the Redskins beat the Cowboys this Sunday! (It could happen!)

A Zippered Bag to carry stuff.

A "Humbug" Bag for a collection of necessities.

A collection of accesories!

Quilting For Charity

Once a month on Friday, I use to meet with a number of other ladies and make Baby Quilts to be given to the clients of Mary’s Center in Washington, DC. The Center provides Health & Wellness support to Women & Children. Several times a year they have Group Baby Showers (Click link for some photos of a recent shower – looks like a quilt I made in the bottom/center picture) — Providing supplies and parenting instructions to expectant mothers. Each mother is invited to pick a Baby Quilt of their choice from the quilts we make. The next shower is in October.

G-Street Fabrics supports Quilting For Good by providing classroom space & machines for our monthly sewing. Unfortunately, to better fit their schedule, G-Street has changed the day that the classroom is available from Friday to Tuesday. This is not a good day for me and I haven’t been able to go for several months. I spoke with the leader the other day and she told me the supply of quilts was low (there can be as many as 45+ expectant mothers at the shower). I’m going to try and make a few quilts on my own

This is a pile of fabrics – I’ve washed & ironed 17 yards of fabric! Now to get to Cutting & Stitching~~

The Opinions Expressed by the Fabric is not Necessarily Those of the Sewer

I have been sewing this Labor Day Weekend. I made a diaper bag for Aiden this past summer and later was requested to make some more bags. These are a gift for a friend of K’s who is a Dallas Cowboy’s Fan —

The pattern is called "Miranda Bag" and "Mini Miranda Bag" by Joan Hawley of Lazy Girl Designs. Once I got the larger one made, the smaller one was a bit easier. She has a number of bag patterns and they are not too bad to make.

There are 9-10 pockets on the inside and the bottom has a "Bag-E-Bottom" in a sleeve to give it firmness and stability.

Yard Work

M’s been busy teaching this summer & hasn’t had enough time to work in the yard. So, with (slightly) cooler weather and a few days break from teaching, he has been working outside.

First, when he saw the calendar & weather were cooperating, he ordered a truck load of mulch. Early Monday morning the truck arrived and dumped it’s load out front. Tools-in-hand, Mel started distributing the mulch. He paced himself – working 30 minutes outside & coming back in for some tea/water and rest for about an hour. A few days it was too hot, and he had to stay inside from noon until 6 pm, and then he had 3 days of teaching.

He’s just about got the mulch distributed, but still has a bit to do.

Pyracanthia Bush – Neighbor was going to dig it up and throw it away, so M dug it up for her and transplanted it to our yard. He cut it back to help with the transplant ‘shock’ and the dry, hot summer hasn’t been good for it. Maybe it will live!
