My Tested Blocks

My group tested 13 of the 100 Blocks.  We randomly received patterns and didn’t know (and had no choice) as to which techniques we would be testing.  All Blocks finish to 12” square (12-1/2” unfinished).

Jennifer Oden – Block #792 – Ruffled Feathers (Pieced)

This Block is previewed in Today’s Quilty Pleasures Blog and is made in shades of orange.

My version of this Block is in Purples!

I made blocks from 2 of the listed Featured Designers.

Jo and Kelly Kramer – Block #788 – Sailor’s Delight (Pieced)

Jo’s favorite colors are red and blue and you will notice that she uses these to create a Patriotic star block.  On her Blog and featured in Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Volume #8 is a quilt made of her block, Sailor’s Delight!

I made mine in similar colors, but a bit more whimsical!

For those of you that follow me, this was one of the blocks I tested shortly after my Rotator Cuff surgery!  I had limited movement and strength, so I had the help of a wonderful friend who supplied me with the cut fabric pieces so I could stitch up this block.  Quilter Friends are the BEST!  Thanks, Prue!

Anne Marie Chany – Block #773 – Waffle (Pieced)

I actually made two of these blocks, the first one was tested in March and my mind was thinking “Easter” fabric, but than I realized  the issue would be published in the fall, so I changed my fabric to browns and dog bones!

Here’s the first block I made.  I did some fussy cutting for the corner squares.

This was a fun block!  It does have a number of HST (Half-Square Triangles).

My Tested Blocks

My group tested 13 of the 100 Blocks.  We randomly received patterns and didn’t know (and had no choice) as to which techniques we would be testing.  All Blocks finish to 12” square (12-1/2” unfinished).

Melissa Peda – Block #711 – Flower Power (Appliqué)

Check out her blog for pictures of this block using several different fabrics.  It is interesting how different colors/fabrics affect how this block looks.

This is a fun applique block that can have different personalities dependent on the fabrics you choose.  I can see it as a pillow, wall hanging, or center medallion on a quilt.  Melissa shows it as a fun placemat.

It made me think of Sunflowers!  So, here is the block that I made.

2013 Quilter’s Quest–November 8-17–Day #3

Sunday, November 10, 2013 – The Third Day of the Quest! And this will be our final day.  We have only two shops to visit and we will have done it all!

Our first shop today is Jinny Beyer Studio in Great Falls, VA. Jinny is the very talented designer who created the Quest Fabric and has so many marvelous fabrics!  Her shop is not the ‘typical’ quilt shop.  I don’t find novelty/baby fabrics, but I do find rich, vibrant colors and exciting quilts!

After leaving Great Falls, we head back through DC and head east – then into Southern Maryland.  See some of the views on our drive.

The store is Material Girls Quilt Boutique in La Plata, MD. I’m not sure, but I think this shop is the farthest one.  It took us about an hour and a half to get all the way there. They have expanded their shop and have lots to see. There was a Veteran’s Day Parade in La Plata today, but we missed most of that traffic.

I now have 10 quilt patterns from the 10 shops; one quilt pattern for finding the scavenger mascots; and one quilt pattern/BOM from the Quilter’s Quest Newsletter!  I’ve picked up several kits for pillowcases, table runners, wall hangings and quilts.  I’ve got fabrics for backings, and enough charm packs plus fabric to make two of the free shop quilts.

We’re done for another year.  It’s been fun; we’ve had beautiful weather; spent some ‘quality’ car-time together and are ready for a week of playing with fabric.

2013 Quilter’s Quest–November 8-17–Day #2

Saturday, November 9, 2013 – The Second Day of the Quest!

I cannot believe it. For the first time, we visited 5 Quilt Shops in one day.  That is half of the participating Quilt Shops!

We’re getting older, and this experience is for fun and for spending some quality “car-time” with one another; so we decided not to push.  We have 5 more shops to visit, but there are quite a few miles involved.   Today we chose to visit the shop in Annapolis, and the two shops around the Baltimore Beltway, saving the last two for Sunday.

We heard that Navy was playing a football game at home and the Quilt Shop in Annapolis isn’t far from the stadium – Easy decision: Start with Cottonseed Glory and get out of Annapolis Before the game!

Walking into the store from the parking lot we were greeted and assured a bus wasn’t scheduled until 11:30 AM, so we could take our time browsing.  I always like looking at their selection of Christmas and Youth/Novelty Fabrics.  I know I can find something I like.

We ran into some people we had seen at Capital Quilts the night before and another carload that we later saw at the next shop. That makes it fun!

Leaving Annapolis behind, we hit the road again.

They had some computer glitches the first day – am hoping all is better for them now.

We were making good time and started out to the last shop we would visit on our 2nd Day of Questing.

Destination:  Bear’s Paw Fabrics in Towson, MD.

It’s almost lunchtime when we leave Bear’s Paw, so, while we were ‘in the neighborhood’ (figuratively speaking) we head out to The Canopy – BBQ.  We picked up carry out – enough for lunch, dinner and then some.

Great way to finish our 2nd day of the Quilter’s Quest.  On Sunday, the stores do not open until noon, so we’ll head out and visit the last two stores – Great Falls, VA & La Plata, MD.

We Interrupt the Quilter’s Quest for this Important Announcement

Well, it is important to Quilters, that is.  There is a new Local Quilt Shop in the area! 

They’ve only been open for a couple of months and we need to get the word out.

Introducing Sandy Royster & Debbie Albrecht of Prints Charming Quilt Shop, Fulton, MD.  Address: 11711 East Market Place, Fulton, MD, 20759.

OK, I’ll admit we had a little trouble finding the store.  Thankful for a Smart Phone, Facebook and the Internet.  I had a general idea of where they were located – Up US29, just north of Burtonsville, take a left at Rt. 216, turn right and then turn left.

First, when exiting US29, you get to go in CIRCLES at a traffic ‘calming’ circle. (Not exactly a ‘calming’ experience.)

Second, there is another traffic circle, so it isn’t exactly a right turn.

Third, it is in a new development – a mixture of stores, office buildings and townhouses – all kind-a mixed together in a maze of roads.  Thanks to Google Maps on my Verizon Smart Phone, we found it.

I walked in and met Debbie.  We had a nice visit and she showed me their new BOM (Block of the Month, to non-quilters), and upcoming class projects.

Here she is showing me the new line of fabric that just came in – Lovely! (Both Debbie and the fabric! HEHEHE!)
