The Best Laid Plans… My last weekend Sewing Room activities were interrupted by HEAT! Last week on Thursday the A/C appeared to stop cooling. Now this unit was completely replaced just a couple of years ago so it couldn’t be anything serious, right?
After some looking around it appeared maybe a circuit breaker was blown. So after checking everything and flipping the breakers, we had cold air on Friday night.
Saturday the A/C stopped working again and nothing we did got it started. Service was called we prepared for Plan A or B or C.
Plan A was that it would be fixed. That wasn’t the case. A part needed to be ordered (and of course it was Sunday) and replaced so on to Plan B.
Plan B was that the part was in stock & repairs could be made right away. It wasn’t available on Monday, so on to Plan B Sub-Plan 1.
Plan B Sub-Plan 1 – The part was not to arrive until Wednesday. After looking at the weather we chose to tough it out and not revert to Plan C which was to buy or borrow 2 air conditioner window units.
The individual part wasn’t available so a kit that included it plus a few other parts was sent. The tech was advised to verify another part didn’t cause the board to break.
I grew up in this house before it had central air conditioning. But I guess either we’ve gotten old or just have become accustomed to A/C. The temperatures were in high 80’s/low 90’s but the humidity was also high.
So on to what was supposed to be accomplished over the weekend.
In the Sewing Room
After PT Monday morning and while waiting for repairs I spent some time in the Sewing Room working on Carole’s Christmas in July.
Step #1 – Make 4 Bell Blocks (continued)
There are Quarter Square Triangles, Half Square Triangles and various sizes of the three fabrics in the Bell Blocks.
Four Bell Blocks were finished by Tuesday.
Step #2 – Make 1 Star Block
On Wednesday Carole released the 2nd Clue – a Star Block. This block uses the same white, gold & Christmas Poinsettias fabric and there is only the one block. This block is made with HSTs and squares with one big square of the Christmas Poinsettias fabric in the center.
The Fussy Cut Poinsettia ended up looking pretty good. I’m glad I did it. To Fussy Cut is to choose a design on the fabric and cut it out specifically to be centered in a block.
Step #3 – Adding Setting Triangles
Thursday was the Finishing Instructions which included Setting Triangles.
The Bell Blocks and Star Block will be Set on Point (diagonally) which will require Setting Triangles made from Background Fabric. Once stitched on the Table Topper will be square.
Finishing
Well not exactly finishing. I selected fabric for the backing and binding. I’ll add it to my “To Be Quilted” WIPs (Works in Progress) pile. I’ve received a package from Fabric Cafe with Fabric to make a 5-yard quilt top, so my week will be full working on that.
It’s nice to have Air Conditioner working again!

I was even glad to go to PT two days to get into some A/C! We were lucky? the air temps outside only got into the 90°s and “Feels like” temps didn’t make it into the 100°s like it did the week before!

Our air conditioner stopped on Thursday but we had been working with repairmen for the past couple weeks trying to troubleshoot what’s going on. Our temps have been much higher than normal. We’re forecasted to top 108 today which, if we do, it’s a state record. Luckily, our nighttime dips to 61 but with little to no breeze, no matter how many windows we open or fans we run we can’t cool it below 78 by the time we need to close up and draw every curtain closed. Oh, and that pesky part was supposed to be here last Friday.

Ours is a fairly new A/C so thankfully most of the expense was covered under warranty. We never could get the house cooler than 88 plus the humidity was horrible. Thankful for neighbors allowing us to use their house as a “cooling station.” Hope yours gets fixed soon 108° is not healthy!

Ours is a 16 year old geothermal unit. It provides AC in the summer and heat in the winter all through a system of wells in the ground and the science behind which I do not understand. It’s been a very economical way to heat and cool. Technology is nice when it works and frustrating when it doesn’t. Yesterday our sunroom reached 94 degrees (my poor plants) and the main level 88. We took a drive in our car to escape the heat for a bit.
