I just love how quilters are so giving!  Many Local Quilt Shops (LQS) have projects for Charity. Pillowcases for Children experiencing Life Altering Medical Issues, Quilts for Cancer Patients and Wounded Warriors, Placemats for Senior Homes and Meals-On-Wheels and even Pet Mats for Shelters.

Sometimes the projects require a lot of time and/or materials.  Sometimes you might want to help but you do not live near the shop.

Here is a project that you can do alone or with your favorite group of quilters.  You can participate with this shop – local or long distance or you can reach out to your own community.  You can do as little as one 6” square block, or make 35 blocks – enough for one quilt – and the shop will have volunteers piece, quilt & bind, or you can make an entire quilt following their guidelines.

The block is merely 6” square and only consists of 2 fabrics.  The background is to be a solid or tonal cream (not tan) and you pick the fabric for the appliqué out of your stash.

Oh, did I forget to mention the block is appliquéd?  You know me and appliqué – not one of my favorite techniques – but there are a number of different ways to do it and lots of tutorials on the web.  This is a simple block – just one piece.  I promise to post a tutorial on how I’m making my block – Fusible, Raw Edge, Machine Stitched Appliqué.  I may even try my hand at some of the other techniques and if I do, I will do tutorials on those, too.

If I can do it, YOU can do it.  Just one block (or more!!).

As some of you know I made a kidney quilt for my daughter’s practice (she is a PA in Nephrology). The quilt is now hanging on the wall and visible for patients. It makes them smile! Now, how hard would it be for us to make some kidney quilts for dialysis centers? Not at all! A block with an appliqued kidney on it, in your choice of fabrics. This could be a fun fabric, a pretty one, you could write a message and when we sew all these together, it is kind of an i spy kidney quilt for seriously sick people. A sign of care, support from quilters. What do you think? ….  All you would have to do is donate your time, a little piece of fabric for the kidney and some machine or hand applique. Peanuts.
