Busy Week, Not Much Sewing

Sometimes Not Much Time for Sewing

Two days of PT, one day stitching group, errands & Dentist and one day car oil change & Quilt Show didn’t leave much time in my Sewing Room.

We have a small group of quilters that usually meets on Thursdays for a few hours. Most of my work is by machine, but I do some hand stitching. This week i did some repair work on a quilt I made for my daughter 7 years ago.

A bit of hand stitching repair needed..

Here is a member of our Thursday Stitching Group helping to estimate the border for his Mom’s hand pieced quilt top.

Kip estimates 2-1/2 dog lengths should be about right.

The QOV top was finished last Sunday, but there was still a bit more to do.

Making Binding – I usually make double fold binding so it’s cut either 2-1/4″ or 2-1/2″ and I piece it on the diagonal to reduce bulk. The formula I use to find out the length of binding I’ll need is 2 times the length of the top plus 2 times the width plus 12-18″. This number is then divided by the Width of Fabric which is usually 40-42″. This gives me the number of Width of Fabric strips to cut and it will be plenty of binding. I’d rather have too much than too little

Prepping the Backing – Since next Monday we have to take my sewing machine to the shop for (hopefully) repairs, we’ll stop by a few quilt shops. One on my list usually has a nice selection of wide backing. If I find one I like, I’ll pick up 2 yards of 108″ wide fabric for the backing.

If I don’t find wide backing I like, I may need help digging out some backing fabric from my stash. If needed, I’ll try to find some next week. The backing will have to be pieced.

Thursday ended up with an emergency dental visit for two loose crowns. Unfortunately they could not be saved. The dentist & I will be seeing more of each other unfortunately.

Annapolis Quilt Guild Quilt Show

Friday started with a 7:30 am appointment for my car – oil change & wash. I’m a little late washing it. After the winter snow, ice & requiitred salt followed by the Spring pollen it really needed a bath!

Afterwards I got gas and met up with one of my Thursday Quilting friends to head off to attend a quilt show put on by a guild in our state.

I took lots of pictures and wanted to share some with you. These are some of the Ribbon Winners.

There were a number of quilts featuring animals and several of them had cats. The dog quilt was very cute.

While many quilts were non-traditional or art quilts, I always enjoy the traditional blocks and quilting. I was very impressed with this hand quilted whole cloth quilt. The stitching was beautiful!

This has been a full and busy week. I’m looking forward to spending some time in my sewing room.

Hope you are making progress on whatever you are stitching this week!

Happy Stitching!
